Over the last couple of months, two of EVCOM’s board members, Dean Beswick (Gorilla Gorilla!) and Pete Stevenson (The Edge Picture Company), have been part of the brilliant Speakers for Schools initiative. Speakers for Schools aim to end educational inequality, giving all young people access to networks that are otherwise only accessible to top fee-paying schools. Their programme brings influential people including creative leaders and CEOs into schools across the country, to give talks to the students, and this is what Dean and Pete have got involved with.
Pete says, “I was chuffed to be invited, on behalf of EVCOM and Speakers for Schools, to speak to the 6th form at Ysgol Aberonwy, and then run a more in-depth session with 20 students studying Media and Film. It was great to see their invention and energy responding to a recruitment film brief for a gaming company.
This is part of EVCOM’s efforts to get our message beyond the big cities and spread awareness that ours is a great industry to work in. And it’s a good illustration too of how much the UK and our world has changed in just a few weeks!”
Dean, who spoke at Highfields School, continues, “This was a very enjoyable and rewarding experience, an interesting challenge to try and connect with a young audience of several hundred people, and something I would highly recommend.”

This is such a rewarding initiative to take part in. I also gave a talk during Careers’ Week at my local secondary school – as part of the Speakers for Schools programme – and have just received my feedback which I’m really happy with. It’s so important to inspire the next generation and also to promote awareness of our industry; how can young people aspire to a career in the Events industry if they don’t even know it exists! I think more industry folk should get involved 🙂
