City of Lights is an annual event and is now in its 18th year. It is a procession of hundreds of handmade withy and tissue lanterns made and carried by hundreds of school children in a dazzling procession which winds its way through Truro’s city centre and coincides with the switching on of the Christmas lights and the beginning of the festive period for Cornwall. Our client is a committee of volunteers including individual artists, Kernow Education Arts Partnership, Totally Truro and Truro City Council and Mackerel Sky has been involved with the event for 7 years.

Production Values

The production values of City of Lights is key to its success. It is a visual extravaganza for thousands of people and with such an established event, expectation is high as to the quality of the designs of the lanterns themselves as well as their construction.

Overall Effectiveness

City of Lights is a mainstay of the Cornish festive calendar and is a rite of passage for the participating schoolchildren. It is part of the fabric of Cornish culture and demonstrably achieves its objectives year after year. We know this through evaluation discussions, feedback from stakeholders and feedback from the general public as well as the external evaluation reports that we commission every 3 years.
