Overwhelmingly positive feedback from EVCOM’s first Academy training day has put a reprise event in the Spring firmly on the calendar, says Rachel Ley, Head of the Association’s Professional Development Committee.

Twenty delegates from businesses within the events and visual communications sector attended the one-day event at ExCeL’s dedicated new meeting and learning environment, CentrEd, on Friday 9 September.

Promoted as a concentrated learning experience, the Academy delivered practical, operational business skills for its attendees – from live events and digital agencies, film production companies, venues, destinations and other service providers.

Tutors took delegates on an end-to-end journey through the sales pipeline – from procurement through to pitch presentation, continuing on to contracts and brand protection.

Rachel Ley, who devised the programme on behalf of EVCOM said: “I’ve always had three clear objectives for the Academy. The content had to help companies to win business.  The tutors we selected had to be passionate about their area – and that passion had to be matched with a proven track record. Also it was key to include one-on-one sessions that would give every delegate the chance to get their own burning questions answered.”

To meet this demand, a series of specialist ‘campfire’ clinics ran throughout the day, giving direct access to experts in employment law, regulatory issues, insurance and CSR.

Delegate comments were enthusiastic: “I’ve gained a much better understanding of the entire project pipeline. And the fact that it was all taught so simply and clearly within a single day is brilliant” said Fleur Decam, Production Manager, Plastic Pictures.

“What was particularly interesting for us was that our attendees had varying confidence levels in their existing knowledge – they told us it was every bit as valuable to reaffirm what they thought they already knew, as to pick up new insights”, added Rachel Ley.

The Academy’s tutors were: Procurement expert Wendy Allerton, TJA Consulting; Farina Azam, Head of IP Commercial Department, Travlaw LLP; internal communications specialist Christina Fee, Holisticomm; Steve Garratt, Creative Director, The Giggle Group and Rachel Ley, Managing Director, RLC.
