This month we celebrated Valentine’s day at a time when so many people aren’t able to be with their loved ones because of this pandemic. So for this member feature article we asked our members to send us work speaking to the themes of love, care and/ or isolation. Thank you to our contributors for sending in such personal, moving and celebratory projects.
Tim Langford creates personal film about family from archive footage
Tim says, “This is the story of my family told through snapshots – recordings my Dad made and the many photo’s I’ve kept. It’s dedicated to all the people we miss but most of all Mum and Dad x”
Studio Giggle use motion capture technology to create a film about isolation during lockdown
Back in Lockdown 1, we created a short film called Isolation. The film was based on the 5 stages of grief that people were experiencing during the lockdown. Isolation follows 2 indistinct characters as they leave each other before lockdown. Their moods and colours change throughout the film as they try to keep busy. They both experience denial, bargaining, anger and depression. But this all changes when one character communicates through the internet and companionship resumes. The characters are now able to exercise together, chat and dance together. Isolation concludes as the constraints are released, and the two can meet again.
We used motion capture technology to create the film’s characters and real-time generative software, Notch, to bring the motions to life. The film was made completely remotely with one of our animators wearing the motion capture suit, performing their section, sanitising the kit and delivering it to our other animator so that the process could be repeated. The whole film was a great opportunity for our team to try something new and channel their creativity into something fun!
