This week we were joined by recruitment and HR specialists who shared their expertise, shedding light on the realities of the current job market, and swapping tips on how to sell yourself and how to go about upskilling. Liz Sinclair (esprecruitment), Cathy Alford (Searchlight) and Pip Foulsham (Pip Foulsham HR) were our brilliant panelists, and the discussion was chaired by EVCOM Board Chair Charlotte Gentry (Pure Comms Group).
Covid-19 has hit our sectors hard, especially the events sector. The panel discussed the difficulties of the current job market which can’t be ignored, however they also talked about the possibilities of upskilling, and their hope for the future. They shared their thoughts on how to write a CV that stands out from the pile, during this time of oversubscribed job adverts. Tailoring CV’s and cover letters, they said, is essential. All three agreed that a scatter-gun approach – applying for jobs outside of your skillset – was not something they’d recommend given the number of applicants most jobs are seeing. The panel ended with a reminder that whilst times are hard, they do believe things will get better. Now, they said, is the time – if you can – to focus on upskilling via courses especially in the digital and virtual sphere. Audience members asked lively questions throughout.
