The Academy aims to give disadvantaged young people from Hackney and Islington filmmaking training whilst making films for real briefs for small charities (-£200k/year). It highlights the four key production roles over 12 weeks: scriptwriter, producer, director, editor- widening industry access. Also creating resource for chosen charities.
Young people aged between 16-24. The participants came from mixed ethnicity, disadvantaged backgrounds in North London. Each of three Academies has made a film for a small local charity. So far: CoppaFeel: Breast Cancer Awareness, The Living Wage, Homelessness Charity: Street Souls. They were selected because our panel felt its cause would be most advanced by film. £4k/course cost is covered by Casual. Top candidate gets work experience with us.
MEASURES OF IMPACT AND EFFECTIVENESS
25 young-people given basic filmmaking knowledge/training and showreel film for the future. Also experienced working environment. Anonymous survey- 86% rated course very good/excellent. 93% – more likely to become filmmaker as result. Interest in all charities increased– StreetSouls +200% enquiry rise- interactive good for educating children. CoppaFeel – 88%.
