PROJECT AIMS

The objective was to illustrate what farmers had learned in managing the parasitic weed Striga. The video programmes had to highlight local innovations along with new techniques that the farmers had acquired and developed, and then make sure they would be understood by audiences in other villages and countries.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

About 50,000 “Fighting Striga” DVDs in local languages were distributed across Africa. Over 100,000 farmers watched the videos at village shows or in smaller groups followed by a discussion with field staff. Some farmers purchased a DVD from their local radio station and watched the videos at home with family, friends and neighbours. The programmes were also broadcast on TV in Mali, Niger, Ghana and Nigeria.

MEASURES OF IMPACT AND EFFECTIVENESS

A survey in 10 Malian villages investigated the effectiveness of the “Fighting Striga” videos. In all villages farmers adopted new techniques and increased their yield. Over 800 organisations distributed and showed the videos across Africa, expanding the visibility and impact of ICRISAT as a research for development organisation.
